Update to my 1000th recovery day commemorative trip: I did it! Phew!
The week prior to this trip I had all sorts of issues that I vented in my last post. It was causing some stress to say the least. The morning of our drive down south to start the trip, everything really came together! I knew my knee would settle, just didn't know when. Turns out it needed a full week to resolve to baseline. The plantar fasciitis - I bought some new insoles to wear in the shoes I'd be hiking in the water with. I did feel the PF at times, but it did not flare up anywhere near as bad as I was expecting. Not sure it was all the cold water (kept inflammation down?) or the type of walking (fairly slow, somewhat flat, no deep sand traps?), but whatever it was it was not a hindrance! Lastly, my pounding pre-headcold headache did not materialize into a headcold while I was camping! Now that I'm home, the sniffles are starting. I don't know why it didn't turn for the worse, but maybe I wore my body down and the sniffles resumed perhaps, but so happy I was not suffering on my trip! All in all, we had another great camping trip to the desert! The commemorative trip part was the 38 mile, 3 day backpacking trip down a desert river which required walking in the river for most of the 3 days. Your feet are wet, cold at times (although neoprene socks were the ticket!), carrying a 15 pound pack (husband carried about 70% of the total weight, I carried about 30%). We were walking about 8 hours a day with some breaks. My body and knees were sore at the end of each day, but somehow it held up for 3 days of long hiking. The final 2 days of our trip I took it very easy with very light/slow hikes as my body was pretty worked! We had a pretty full moon most of this trip, pretty mild to warm daytime temps for November, mid 30s for the nighttime temps. Thanks to our new backpacking gear we stayed pretty warm in our Enlightened Equipment down backpacking quilts. Very happy to say this trip worked out for the best in the end!
